    A R&D Scientist combines technical knowledge and innovation when formulating a variety of personal care and cosmetics products from concept brief into finished product.



    • Experienced personal care researcher responsible for initiating project concepts, developing objectives, plans, assigning priorities and completing multiple projects under limited supervision. Independently investigates/resolves research problems and scale up issues.
    • Utilize and following relevant legal requirements, regulations and product development standards.
    • Demonstrate creativity and resourcefulness when solving issues that arise during the development process.
    • Determine and perform appropriate cost reductions (raw materials).
    • Scale-up of approved formulations, to include identification of critical process variables for internal and co-pack production.
    • Order raw materials for the pilot batches.
    • Supervise and coordinate pilot batches.
    • Provide paperwork for new formula and new raw materials to operations.
    • Ability to trouble shoot production issues and address batch variations.
    • Ensure products are passed all stability requirements, safety and micro challenge testing from laboratory bench batch into production batch.
    • Reformulate current products to improve costs, safety and regulations, etc
    • Remain up to date and current on trends in the retail market and trends on formulations materials, ingredients, etc.
    • Set up specifications and write compounding procedures.
    • Provide specifications and other information to QA to receive and test new ingredients and finished goods.
    • Plans and executes experiments and interprets results; evaluates new formulations through design, set up and evaluation of panel testing.
    • Research product formulations and properties and interactions of raw materials with vendor.
    • Identifies shelf life, regulatory and claims testing validation requirements and coordinates with Quality Control to conduct testing. Reviews labeling for accuracy.
    • Partners with engineering/operations to identify production processing and equipment needs.
    • Maintains product development laboratory utilizing good laboratory practices; identifies lab capability requirements and associated resource and equipment needs.
    • Maintains and calibrates all the laboratory equipment weekly to ensure working properly.
    • Compiles and organizes detailed product, usage and regulatory data.
    • Represents product development issues on teams within the company.
    • Provides expert input to and advises on inquiries from other departments and customers.
    • Performs general clerical duties such as filing, mailing samples and report writing.
    • Initiates label changes.
    • Prepares Certificates of Analysis.
    • Other duties as assigned.



    Bachelor's degree (BS) in product development, chemistry or related field from four-year college or university with 4 to 6 years of formulating personal products.



    • Good problem solving, decision making skills and attention to detail. Displays a sense of urgency and initiative with creativity and flexibility.
    • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and work independently.
    • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, and volume.
    • Ability to use a computer to create spreadsheets and charts and run reports.



    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and taste or smell.  The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and sit; and view computer monitors o video displays.  The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and color vision.
